Cylinder: How to Take Care of Non Lubricated Air Compressor Cylinder

An Air compressor is classified on basis of the cylinder as lubricated or non-lubricated types. According to your engineering application, you have to select the proper one.

This classification is done mainly due to the lubrication of the cylinder, all the other parts are the same in both types of compressor.

  • Why Non-Lubricated Cylinder is Required

In many industries, clean, oil-free compressed air is the main requirement for manufacturing the product.

Lubricated air compressors are vastly used in old days due to their efficiency. In the pharmaceutical industry, oil-free compressed air is the standard requirement.  A non-lubricated cylinder can fulfill the oil-free compressed air requirement.

  • Precautions to take for non-lubricated cylinder

As there is no lubrication inside the air cylinder, proper care must be taken for air compressors fitted with non-lubricated cylinders than lubricated cylinders.

Corrosion formation on non-stainless steel elements requires thorough investigation. When the compressor works, some condensation is formed.

The lack of an oil film on the non-lubricated air cylinder walls is subjected to severe corrosion caused by condensation.

You may face some problems due to corrosion in cylinder walls while using the compressor.

The first drawback is the wear-out ratio of piston rings is high. Hence the cylinder walls must be protected against corrosion and the cause of condensation must be eliminated.

You may not observe the problem in running condition, but when the air compressor is idle for a long time, corrosion will create a severe problem.

To avoid this some care must be taken before stopping the compressor.

01) It is recommended that the water safety device must be fitted with an air compressor. When there is no water safety device fitted, stop the water supply a few minutes before stopping the air compressor and allow the compressor to run unloaded.

This allows the condensation to drain out.

02) Do not keep the air compressor idle for a long time; it should be run for at least half an hour every week.

03) Unloading piston in suction valve cover is cleaned at least once a month. Apply a thin layer of grease or silicon to avoid sticking.

04) The air cleaner element must be kept clean at all times, clean it every 500 working hours from inside out.

I hope the information above will help you to take care of your non-lubricated cylinders.
